As fans reminisce about the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) stood tall as the champions, claiming their third IPL title. The final, played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, saw KKR overpower Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in a one-sided contest.
While KKR celebrated their victory, individual brilliance was also on full display throughout the season. Virat Kohli from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) emerged as the Orange Cap winner, amassing 741 runs in 14 matches, reaffirming his status as one of the most consistent performers in the league. Punjab Kings’ Harshal Patel led the bowling charts, securing the Purple Cap with 24 wickets. His match-winning spells were instrumental in keeping Punjab Kings competitive.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ dominance and Sunil Narine’s brilliance
One of the standout stories of the season was Sunil Narine’s resurgence. The KKR all-rounder not only played a pivotal role in his team’s title win but also walked away with the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. With 450 points, Narine became the first player to win the MVP award three times, a testament to his enduring brilliance. His versatility with both bat and ball made him an invaluable asset for the Knight Riders. Additionally, Narine was crowned the Fantasy Player of the Season for his all-round performances.
For Sunrisers Hyderabad, Travis Head’s aggressive stroke play earned him the Most Fours award, with 67 boundaries to his name. His teammate Abhishek Sharma showcased his power-hitting prowess, securing the Most Sixes award after smashing 42 sixes during the season. Despite their final loss, SRH’s batting duo played a significant role in propelling the team to the summit clash.
Emerging talents also made their mark. Nitish Kumar Reddy of Sunrisers Hyderabad was named the Emerging Player of the Season, highlighting his promising future. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals’ Jake Fraser-McGurk was recognized as the Striker of the Season for his explosive batting displays. Kolkata Knight Riders' Ramandeep Singh earned the Catch of the Season award for his breathtaking fielding effort, adding to KKR’s collection of accolades.
In a nod to sportsmanship, Sunrisers Hyderabad was awarded the Fair Play Award, acknowledging their spirit and conduct throughout the tournament.
