2008 was a glorious year not just for Indian cricket but cricket in general. India had won the first-ever T20 World a year back, and a revolution was around the corner. And then it happened: the first-ever season of the Indian Premier League started in 2008.
The first match took place between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Brendon McCullum opened the innings for the Knight Riders and made an unbeaten 158 runs. It was the perfect introduction to something that has revolutionized cricket now.
The season ended with a final that saw the two best teams, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings, facing each other. The Royals became the winner of the inaugural edition of the tournament as they chased down the target of 164 runs on the last delivery of their innings.
Next year, Deccan Chargers, a team which finished in last place in 2008 shocked everyone as they became the second team to lift the trophy. In 2010, the domination of Chennai Super Kings started as the MS Dhoni-led side won the coveted IPL trophy.
The Super Kings became a two-time champion the next year. Knight Riders, under the leadership of Gautam Gambhir, won the 2012 edition of the league. Mumbai Indians became the winner of the 2013 season of the tournament. The Knight Riders matched the Super Kings’ record after winning the trophy once again in 2014.
Mumbai Indians became the third team to win the IPL twice in 2015. The David Warner-led Sunrisers Hyderabad dominated 2016. Warner became only the third overseas captain to win the IPL.
From 2017 to 2021, it was a fight between the Super Kings and the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians won the IPL thrice in this period of five years, while the Super Kings won twice. In 2022, the Gujarat Titans, under the captaincy of Hardik Pandya, won the IPL trophy in their debut year. It was also the first time Pandya captained an IPL side.
The Super Kings matched Mumbai Indians’ record of winning the IPL on five occasions in 2023. 2024 was the year of the Knight Riders as they lifted the IPL trophy after a gap of 10 years.
