It almost felt like ‘Ee Sala Cup Namde’ slogan had become a bit of a jinx: Sunil Gavaskar

Former Indian captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has opened up on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) bagging a six-run win over the Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 Final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, June 3, to lift their first-ever title in 18 years.

Gavaskar felt that the famous Kannada slogan ‘Ee Sala Cup Namde’ was more of a jinx for the franchise all these years. However, he felt, during this season, the slogan was toned down and things worked out for the franchise.

“This was the one year when that popular slogan—“Ee sala cup namde”—was more muted than usual. It wasn’t in everyone’s face like before, and maybe that helped. It almost felt like that slogan had become a bit of a jinx, and once it was toned down, things worked out,” Gavaskar told India Today.

Moreover, Gavaskar hailed RCB for their dominant performances against Lucknow Super Giants in their last league game, Qualifier 1 against Punjab Kings, and the final against the same franchise despite being 15-20 runs short.

“Congratulations to RCB—they’ve played top-class cricket throughout the IPL. Especially their last 2–3 performances were outstanding: chasing 230+ against LSG, demolishing Punjab in Qualifier 1 in just 14 overs, and then keeping their nerve in the final despite being 15–20 runs short of a par score,” he added.

Moving into the details of the grand finale, RCB posted a dominating total of 190/9 in 20 overs after losing the toss. Virat Kohli (43), Rajat Patidar (26), Mayank Agarwal (24), Liam Livingstone (25), and Jitesh Sharma (24) played crucial knocks.

In reply, Josh Inglis (39) and Shashank Singh (61*) put up an exceptional show to take their side over the line, but impressive bowling skills by RCB bowlers in the middle overs helped them to win by six runs and lift the silverware.
