“I don’t know why he is batting below Axar Patel” - Jason Gillespie questions Washington Sundar’s position in the XI

Former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie criticized India's T20I batting order, questioning why Washington Sundar, after his match-winning 49*, is consistently slotted below Axar Patel. Gillespie suggests Axar is too high in the order for conditions outside the subcontinent.

Before the fourth T20 International against Australia, Australia's former fast bowler Jason Gillespie expressed a critical assessment of India's squad lineup and questioned the batting order employed in the previous match. The conversation follows Washington Sundar's incredible late cameo, which contributed to India's resounding victory in Hobart.

After Washington Sundar's game-winning innings in the third Twenty20 International, veteran Australian paceman Jason Gillespie questioned Team India's batting order.

After his innings helped India over the finish line in the third T20I, he believes Washington Sundar should be moved up the batting order. After Axar Patel, the left-hander entered the game at number six and had an incredible inning, hitting four sixes and three boundaries. He was crucial to the Men in Blue's 5-wicket victory, which tied the five-match series at one.

The southpaw came in at number six, behind Axar Patel, and hammered an undefeated 49 runs. At Bellerive Oval in Hobart, he played fearlessly and went after the Australian seamers, hitting three fours and four sixes in his 23-ball innings to help India chase down the 187-run goal.

“I don’t know why he is batting below Axar Patel. That 49* was absolutely superb. He wasn’t intimidated by the Australian seamers and just looked to take it on. They’ve got a nice batting lineup. I just felt Axar Patel was one or two spots too high in that order. He’s a good player, no doubt. But he is probably more suited to subcontinent conditions,” said Gillespie on the Fast Bowling Cartel podcast.

Gillespie praised Sundar and said that the 26-year-old should bat higher in the order than Axar Patel. He added that the latter should not be so high up the batting order because he is better suited to bat in subcontinental circumstances. Given Sundar's exceptional batting ability and poise under duress, he thought the order was illogical.
