Jasprit Bumrah’s absence opens doors for ‘world-class’ Shami, says Gautam Gambhir

Jasprit Bumrah’s absence from India’s Champions Trophy squad presents an opportunity for “world-class” Mohammed Shami and other fast bowlers, according to India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir.

Bumrah, a key figure in India’s bowling attack, has been ruled out of the 50-over tournament, which starts on February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai, due to a lower back injury. His absence is considered a significant blow to India’s title ambitions.

India, the top-ranked ODI team, recently dominated England with a 3-0 series win, concluding with a commanding 142-run victory. However, despite the triumph, discussions were centered around Bumrah’s injury and its impact on the team.

Addressing the situation, Gambhir acknowledged the setback but remained optimistic. “If he’s injured, he’s injured. Whether it’s me or the captain, we can’t do much about it,” Gambhir said. “We know he’s crucial, but this is an opportunity for Harshit (Rana), Arshdeep (Singh), and Mohammed Shami to step up and deliver for the country.”

Fast bowler Harshit Rana, who made his ODI debut in the series against England, impressed with six wickets in three matches. Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh also contributed with two wickets in the final game. However, the biggest boost for India’s bowling attack has been the return of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami.

Shami, aged 34, made a comeback in the white-ball format after recovering from a heel injury. His experience and skillset have strengthened India’s squad, with Gambhir emphasizing his importance. “It’s always good to have a world-class bowler back,” Gambhir said. “With his experience and quality, we know what he can do with the ball in his hand.”

In his return, Shami picked up five wickets across T20s and ODIs. The team management carefully handled his workload, ensuring he bowled long spells while maintaining his fitness. “We played him in two T20s and two ODIs to manage his workload,” Gambhir added. “Hopefully, he’ll be fresh and ready for the Champions Trophy.”

India will begin their campaign against Bangladesh on February 20 before a much-anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on February 23 in Dubai.
