Ahead of the crucial Asia Cup showdown between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott found himself in an amusing situation during the pre-match press conference. When asked if Bangladesh would be feeling the heat in what is a do-or-die match for them, Trott responded by saying that the Tigers had won the continental event a few times.

This led to the reporter correcting him immediately pointing out that Bangladesh has never lifted the Asia Cup title. Surprised, Trott asked, “Are you sure?” seemingly confident in his initial claim. Even after the clarification, the former England cricketer stuck to his guns, suggesting that perhaps Bangladesh had won the 50-over version of the tournament. “I thought they won the 50-over Asia Cup!” he said.

But he was off the mark again—Bangladesh has yet to win the Asia Cup in any format. Realizing his mistake, Trott was spotted sheepishly checking the fact on his phone and finally admitted, “I really thought they were champions.”

Bangladesh in must-win situation vs AFG

As for the on-field action, the stakes are sky-high for Bangladesh in today’s clash against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. After suffering a defeat to Sri Lanka in their opening match, Bangladesh must win this encounter—and by a solid margin—to stay in contention for the Super Four stage.

History, however, isn’t on their side. Bangladesh have never defeated Afghanistan in a T20I played away from home. Out of 12 encounters between the two nations in the shortest format, Afghanistan hold a 7-5 edge. Notably, all of Bangladesh’s victories have come on home soil, meaning they will need to overturn past trends to keep their Asia Cup hopes alive.

If Bangladesh end up losing the clash against Afghanistan, they will be knocked out of the Asia Cup. If they win, they will stay alive and most probably the net run-rate will come into play at the end of the group stage clash in the ongoing Asia Cup.
