On Friday morning, May 9, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially decided to indefinitely suspend the Indian Premier League 2025 season due to the ongoing war-like tensions between India and Pakistan.
This development emerged after the IPL officials decided to abandon the match between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Delhi Capitals (DC) midway in 10.1 overs during the first innings on Thursday night, May 8.
On Thursday night, after the game was called off, IPL chairman Arun Dhumal stated that any further decisions on the continuation of the league will be taken only after consultation with the government officials.
"We are reviewing the situation. It's evolving, and we haven't received any directive from the government yet. Any decision will be taken keeping all logistical considerations and the best interests of stakeholders in mind," Dhumal said on Thursday night.
While BCCI has many options left to decide the league’s continuation, the board decided on a temporary suspension, highlighting the safety of players, support staff, broadcast crew, and all the stakeholders involved.
As of now, the Indian board and the IPL officials have a few immediate concerns, like the safe movement of all teams, players, broadcast crews, and the league staff from Dharamsala to New Delhi with the best security possible. At the time of writing this article, they were safely being moved in a bus.
With the Thursday night game getting called off, IPL has concluded 58 games this season. However, the remaining 12 league phase games and the playoffs are expected to take place after India’s tour of England.
Speaking about the current standings, Gujarat Titans are on top of the points table with 16 points, amassing eight wins and suffering three defeats.
