When South Africa and New Zealand visited the subcontinent in back-to-back years and breached India's stronghold, the security of the once-dominant and nearly unbeatable Indian squad at home was shattered.

The fact that Gautam Gambhir's squad has lost five of their last seven Test matches due to these two factors indicates that they have a number of problems, which are difficult to solve. However, the flaws that have emerged against spin bowling will undoubtedly be the starting point.

KL. Rahul acknowledged that his side has been struggling with spin for some time, and he is willing to approach batting great Sunil Gavaskar for help on how to resolve this problem. When stand-in ODI skipper KL Rahul addressed reporters, it became clear how tough it was to determine what was causing this decline in performance.

Regarding the team's abrupt downturn, he provided few conclusive answers. Rahul was prepared to concede one important point, though: the team urgently needs to utilise the wealth of expertise from earlier Indian cricket periods, whose players were renowned masters of spin.

“I cannot give you a definitive answer. I can only say that we have not been able to play spinners well. We understand and recognise that this is a part of our game and that we are not able to play better against spin bowling. You spoke about (Sunil) Gavaskar sir speaking on the issue - we can talk to him and understand what we need to do better against spin. We are already trying to find ways to improve. I don't think it will happen overnight.”

“I don't know the answer as to why we used to play earlier and why we don't play well now. There are many reasons for this. But we can only think about how we can do better as players and individually, how can we get better and when such a situation comes back, in the next 6-7 months our series will be in Sri Lanka and then the Indian home series will be in Australia - so, how can we do better?”
