Karun Nair, an Indian batter returning to the national team after eight years, spoke candidly about his recall to Team India. He also received a special message from his close friend and former Karnataka teammate, KL Rahul, who will also be in the Indian squad for the England series.
As India looks to make a seamless transition from veterans like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin during a five-match Test series against England away from home, Nair may make his first Test appearance in eight years. After the great opener, Virender Sehwag, Nair is the only other triple-centurion in Indian cricket.
In a video posted on its X handle by the BCCI, Rahul stated, “I’ve known him for a very long time and the months that he spent here in the UK, playing cricket and how hard and lonely it was and for him to be able to do all of that and come back into the Indian team. I think it’s special for him, for his family, and for friends like us who’ve seen his journey.”
Following a good time with Northampton in the 2024 County Championship Division Two, where he amassed 487 runs in 11 innings, Karun Nair has returned to the national team. In a recent unofficial Test match, he scored a double century (204) for India A against the England Lions.
Last season, the 33-year-old Nair showed remarkable form in domestic cricket, amassing nine hundreds in all forms. During his Ranji Trophy season, he amassed 863 runs at an average of 53.93 in 9 games, including two half-centuries and four hundreds.
Karun will be playing his sixth international red-ball cricket match if he is chosen to start for India versus England in the first Test match, which is set to take place at Headingley, Leeds. He has scored 374 runs in seven innings thus far, 303 of which have come in a single inning.
