The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have confirmed the return of the legendary Australian all-rounder to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in a significant statement ahead of the 2026 season.

Shane Watson, a former Australian all-rounder, has been appointed as their new assistant coach, adding even more global experience to their IPL 2026 support team. In an effort to improve on their recent impressive results, KKR has added another prominent member to their backroom crew.

Watson, one of the most influential all-rounders of his era, amassed over 10,000 runs in international cricket, playing in 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20Is. In addition, he has around 300 wickets at the highest level and was crucial to Australia's victories in the ODI World Cup in 2007 and 2015.

He even had a fantastic 12-year IPL career (2008–2020), playing in 145 games and scoring four hundreds. He has played for winning IPL teams, like as the Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. Watson moved smoothly into coaching and mentoring positions in international T20 tournaments after retiring from cricket.

Welcoming him to the franchise, KKR CEO Venky Mysore said, "We are thrilled to welcome Shane Watson to the KKR family. His experience as a player and coach at the highest level will add immense value to our team culture and preparation. His understanding of the T20 format is world-class, and we look forward to his contributions both on and off the field."

“It’s a great honour to be part of a franchise as iconic as Kolkata Knight Riders. I’ve always admired the passion of KKR fans and the team’s commitment to excellence. I’m eager to work closely with the coaching group and players to help bring another title to Kolkata,” Watson said in a statement.

Prior to Watson, KKR had announced that Abhishek Nayar would take over as the team's head coach in place of Chandrakanth Pandit. The renowned West Indian Dwayne Bravo is already a mentor for the Kolkata team. As they get ready for IPL 2026, KKR hopes to further solidify their strategic core with Watson joining the coaching team.
