The year 2025 has been a solemn year for cricket fans as many beloved players bid goodbye to the game, either in full or partially. This marks the end to an era full of memorable performances and inspiring careers that the cricketing world has witnessed in 2025.
Multiple players have decided to bid goodbye to certain formats of international cricket owing to age, injuries or no longer being in contention for national team selection. In the eight months so far, many cricketers have made their fans cry tears of farewell.
Memories of legendary conflicts, incredible achievements, and priceless contributions to their teams are left behind when they depart.
A year of farewell till now
Some of the biggest names of international cricket have said good bye to the game in full or partially. Let’s first talk about the names that have announced their retirements from all forms of international cricket and the game will be poorer without them.
Cheteshwar Pujara, Martin Guptill, Tamim Iqbal, Varun Aaron, Shapoor Zadran, Wriddhiman Saha, Dimuth Karunaratne, Heinrich Klaasen, Piyush Chawla, Nicholas Pooran, and Andre Russell announced their retirement from all formats of the game- T20Is, ODIs and Test cricket.
While some of the players like Pujara, Saha, Aaron, Chawla from India were not in contention for return to Indian team, retirement of players like Heinrich Klaasen (33) and Nicholas Pooran (29) raised alarms about cricketers opting to call time on international cricket for lucrative T20 league careers.
Dimuth Karunaratne, Martin Guptill, and Tamim Iqbal retired with their heads held high, while Andre Russell retired as a legend and one-time T20 World Cup winner.
Among partial retirements, some legends decided to limit their appearances.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, two giants of not only Indian cricket, but world cricket, decided to retire from Test cricket in May this year. This was a shocking news, as Kohli is just 36 years old and had some 2-3 years of good cricket left in him. The duo will continue to play in ODIs for India.
Marcus Stoinis, Mushfiqur Rahim, Steve Smith, and Glenn Maxwell chose to step away from ODI cricket, signaling a shift of focus toward T20s and Test cricket. Angelo Mathews bid goodbye to Tests to focus on limited overs formats for Sri Lanka.
These retirements are a reflection of the shifting dynamics of international cricket as well as the inevitable march of time. Due to changing schedules, heavy workloads, and the increasing popularity of shorter formats, several athletes have chosen to selectively manage their careers.
