The Champions Trophy is one of the most intriguing ICC tournaments that debuted in 1998. The inaugural tournament, termed the Wills International Cup, was played in an ODI knockout format in Bangladesh.
South Africa were the inaugural winners of the tournament, which had been called the Mini World Cup. The maiden tournament was played between nine ICC full-member teams in a knockout format.
After the first two editions in 1998 and 2002, the tournament has been named the Champions Trophy. Since 2009, only the top 8 countries take part in the competition. Australia is the only team in the world that has successfully defended its Champions Trophy title in 2009 after claiming it in 2006.
The Aussies are two-time winners alongside India, who have won the title twice too, however, the Men in Blue have shared the title once with Sri Lanka in 2002 apart from winning it in 2013.
Till 2006, the tournament was held every two years. The prestigious event, scheduled in 2008 was supposed to be hosted by Pakistan but was later removed and shifted to South Africa in 2009 for security reasons in Pakistan. After this, it was held every four years in 2013 and 2017.
There were calls to scrape the tournament with the Champions Trophy not scheduled for 2021. However, the apex board later decided to bring it back in the 2025 edition and award the hosting rights to Pakistan.
West Indies legend Chris Gayle holds the record for most runs in the tournament with 791 runs to his name while New Zealand fast bowler Kyle Mills has taken the most wickets in the tournament with his 28 scalps.
The Aussies are technically the most successful team in the tournament with two straight titles. India has won two, with one being a shared one. South Africa, New Zealand, West Indies, and Pakistan have won the tournament once each.
