One-day cricket is one of the most crucial formats in the sport, where players from across the globe showcase their best performances on the international stage. To recognise these efforts, the International Cricket Council (ICC) annually presents the ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year Award.
The first recipient of this prestigious award in 2004 was England’s Andrew Flintoff. The following year, another England star, Kevin Pietersen, claimed the honour. In 2006 and 2007, the award was won by Australians Michael Hussey and Matthew Hayden, respectively.
India’s MS Dhoni then made history by winning the award in back-to-back years (2008 and 2009), becoming the first player to achieve this feat. South Africa's AB de Villiers won the award for the first time in 2010, followed by Sri Lanka’s Kumar Sangakkara in 2011. Despite his success, Sangakkara’s team lost the ODI World Cup final to India that year in Mumbai.
In 2012, India’s Virat Kohli joined the list of winners, and Sangakkara claimed the award for a second time in 2013. De Villiers dominated the scene in 2014 and 2015, securing the award twice in a row. However, in 2016, Quinton de Kock prevented his compatriot from completing a hat-trick by taking home the accolade.
Kohli returned in style, winning the award consecutively in 2017 and 2018. Despite his stellar performances, Kohli’s India lost the 2017 Champions Trophy final to arch-rivals Pakistan. In 2019, Rohit Sharma had a sensational ODI World Cup in England, making him a deserving winner of the award for the first time.
Pakistan’s Babar Azam etched his name into the history books by winning the honour consecutively in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, Kohli won the award for the fourth time, the most by any player in history. His phenomenal batting display in the ODI World Cup held in India was pivotal, though his team finished as runners-up.
Finally, in 2024, Afghanistan’s Azmatullah Omarzai became the first Afghan player to receive this award. His all-round brilliance, scoring 417 runs at an average of 52.12 and taking 17 wickets, earned him this historic recognition.
