The shortest format of cricket, T20 Cricket, is celebrated for its fast-paced and thrilling nature, captivating both fans and players alike. To honour exceptional performances in Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), the International Cricket Council (ICC) introduced the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year Award in 2021.

The first recipient of this prestigious award was Pakistan’s wicketkeeper-batter Mohammad Rizwan in 2021. Rizwan had an extraordinary year, amassing 1,326 runs in 26 T20I innings at an average of 73.66 and a strike rate of 134.89. His tally included 12 half-centuries and one century.

The highlight of his year was an unbeaten 104 off 64 balls against South Africa in Lahore. Rizwan was also instrumental in Pakistan’s impressive run during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE and Oman.

In the following two years, Suryakumar Yadav from India claimed the award consecutively in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, India’s current T20I captain scored 1,164 runs in 31 T20I innings, averaging 46.56 with an astonishing strike rate of 187.43. His runs included nine half-centuries and two centuries, despite a relatively modest campaign in the T20 World Cup in Australia.

In 2023, Suryakumar continued his brilliance, becoming the third-highest run-scorer of the year with 733 runs in 17 innings at an average of 48.86 and a strike rate of 155.95. His contributions included five fifties and two centuries, making him the first player to win the award back-to-back.

Most recently, the award for 2024 went to India’s young pace sensation, Arshdeep Singh, for his exceptional bowling performances. Arshdeep claimed 36 wickets in 18 T20I innings at an economy rate of 7.49 and an average of 13.50.

He played a crucial role in India’s triumphant 2024 T20I World Cup campaign, finishing as the joint-highest wicket-taker with 17 wickets in eight innings at an economy of 7.16 and an average of 12.64.

Arshdeep has now etched his name in Indian cricket history as the country’s leading wicket-taker in T20Is, with 98 wickets in 62 matches, surpassing Yuzvendra Chahal’s 96 wickets in 79 innings.
