Jasprit Bumrah

Many current and former cricketers feel that Test format is still the pinnacle of the sport. Several top players prefer playing red-ball cricket and rest in white-ball matches. More so, even the ICC is taking a lot of efforts to keep the longest format relevant and along the same lines, the world body also introduced the Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award in 2004.

It was only fitting that arguably the best ever Test cricketer - Rahul Dravid became the first player to win the prestigious award. After him, only five more Indian players have managed to secure the top award in the longest format with Jasprit Bumrah being the latest, having won it in 2024.

Apart from Dravid and Bumrah, the Indian players to win the ICC Men’s Test Cricketer of the Year award are - Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli.

Moreover, Australia’s Steve Smith is the only player in the last two decades to have won this award twice - in 2015 and 2017 when he was at the peak of his powers with the bat.

On most of the occasions, batters have been honoured with this award. Jasprit Bumrah is only the fifth bowler and fourth specialist fast bowler to win the Test Cricketer of the Year award. Dale Steyn, Mitchell Johnson, Ashwin, and Pat Cummins are the other bowlers who have won it in 2008, 2014, 2016 and 2019 respectively.

Notably, Ashwin is the only spin bowler to have won this award which is surprising. Most of the Test matches in Asia are dominated by spinners and only one spinner in 20 years, has managed to be consistent through the year among teams like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.
