Former Indian cricketer Manoj Tiwary has slammed the Indian team management for being the reason behind Rohit Sharma’s retirement on social media. Tiwary felt Rohit deserved a proper farewell match as he dedicated a lot of time to the Indian team over the years.
Notably, the Indian captain Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from the longest format of the game on May 7, Wednesday. He took to Instagram to announce his decision to step down from the Test format.
Tiwary stated that Rohit should’ve retired on the field instead of announcing it on social media. Top players like Tim Southee and James Anderson received farewells in recent years, but Rohit couldn’t have a farewell.
"If Rohit Sharma had retired not on social media but on the field after playing, it would have been a more fitting send-off. It would've felt better for all of us too," Tiwary was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
“Just look at his record as a Test captain, it's very good. He's won 12 Tests, lost 9, and drawn 3. So there's no doubt about his success rate — it's solid," he added.
While Rohit Sharma had an exceptional captaincy record in white ball formats, winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and ICC Champions Trophy 2025 titles, he couldn’t take the side to victories over New Zealand (Lost by 0-3 at home) and Australia (Lost by 1-3 away) in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
"He was a very popular leader among this group of boys. If you see, even the young players wanted to play under him. We always hear them say in their interviews, 'I really enjoyed playing under Rohit Sharma's captaincy,'” he concluded.
With Rohit Sharma announcing his Test retirement, Shubman Gill is expected to take his spot as the new captain.
