Vaibhav Suryavanshi is still dominating the entire world. The IPL came first, followed by England and, most recently, Australia. The activities of the 14-year-old are catching on like wildfire. When Suryavanshi was just 13 years old, the Rajasthan Royals acquired him for ₹1.1 crore, which made him the talk of the town. He certainly lived up to that trust.
At 14, Suryavanshi became the youngest player to ever smash a century in the IPL against the Gujarat Titans. He then maintained his incredible run by hitting 143 off 78 balls against the England Under-19 squad. He recently hammered 104 off just 62 deliveries against Australia U-19 in the inaugural Youth Test in Chennai, proving that Australia was not spared either.
Vaibhav's performance in Jaipur's Sawai Mansingh Stadium on April 28th astounded everyone. In just 35 balls, he scored an incredible 100 runs. He dominated seasoned bowlers like Mohammed Siraj and Ishant Sharma with seven fours and eleven sixes. His batting also stunned Matthew Hayden and Ravi Shastri, who were in the commentary box. Hayden even said in jest, "He can't be 14!"
It was an unprecedentedly devastating performance from a teenager; even Shastri recalled how Hayden didn't think Vaibhav was that old.
“I was amazed; I was on air in that game in Jaipur. I went on air in the 4th over and I did two stints in a row because we were one commentator short by that time. By the 9th, 10th over, he had gotten to his 100 and he had smacked it," Shastri said while speaking on the Willow Talk show on the LiSTNR Sport podcast.
“He (Vaibhav) was hitting Mohammed Siraj, Ishant Sharma, 10 rows back over extra cover and midwicket. Haydos (Matthew Hayden) was there and he said, ‘Oh, he can’t be 14’ and I said, ‘Come on, calm down,’ he added.
According to Shastri, Vaibhav still has a long way to go before he can be compared to cricketing greats like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. “If he continues to work hard like this, he will definitely become a big name in the future, but for now, he needs to hone his skills in four-day cricket,” Shastri said.
