“The biggest concern between Gill and Surya is Surya” - Mohammad Kaif reveals India’s major concern ahead of ICC T20 World Cup 2026

Mohammad Kaif argues Suryakumar Yadav's (SKY) prolonged poor form is India's biggest T20 World Cup concern, citing his average of <15 in 17 innings in 2025. He stressed that SKY's primary role as captain is to score runs at No. 4, making his failure more critical than Shubman Gill's struggles.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has voiced a major concern about Suryakumar Yadav’s form in the shortest format of the game, as the No.3 batter has been constantly failing to create an impact in the format.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif asserted that while India can find a replacement for Shubman Gill in Sanju Samson or Yashasvi Jaiswal, there is no proper replacement for Suryakumar Yadav at the moment ahead of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.

“The biggest concern between Gill and Surya is Surya. You can find a replacement for Gill; if Gill is out, you can bring in Sanju or call Jaiswal later. But Surya is going to play no matter what. Even if he performs poorly, you will not remove Surya and bring in another captain. That issue does not exist with Gill; if you drop Gill, you can replace him with another player. But Surya will stay. He is the one who will lead you in the World Cup,” Mohammad Kaif said on his YouTube channel.

“That is why Surya has become a bigger concern. His form matters because you have to play the World Cup in a month and a half, and Surya is a big match T20 player. He is also the captain. To win a World Cup, his form is essential. When a captain is scoring runs, his mind works better too. Remember, with good form, you also become a better captain. This is the connection with form. So I feel Surya’s return to form is absolutely necessary,” he added.

India will have eight more games before the start of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. While three games are remaining against South Africa, they will next take on New Zealand at home in a five-match T20I series in 2026.
