Team India bowling coach Morne Morkel, who attended the post-day press conference after the second day’s play against South Africa in the first Test, has revealed that the Indian Test skipper Shubman Gill might have a bad night’s sleep, and it’s not about the workload.
Delving into the details of the incident on Day 2, Gill played a controlled sweep for four before showing signs of discomfort. Later, he signalled for medical assistance after being in visible discomfort near the neck area. He eventually left the field for four runs off three balls.
"Yeah, I think we first need to determine how he got the neck stiffness, maybe just a bad night's sleep. I don't think it's something we can put down to the load," Morkel said while addressing the press in Kolkata on Saturday.
"Gill is a very fit guy; he looks after himself very well. It's just unfortunate that he woke up this morning with a stiff neck and carried that into the day, which was crucial for us. Another partnership with him batting around was going to be needed at the time just bad timing,” he added.
Later on Day 2, the BCCI took to their social platforms to reveal that Gill has been suffering from a neck spasm and he was taken to a nearby hospital for examination and is currently under observation.
"Captain Shubman Gill had a neck injury on Day 2 of the ongoing Test against South Africa in Kolkata. He was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day's play. He is currently under observation in the hospital. He will take no further part in the Test match. He will continue to be monitored by the BCCI medical team. Gill's injury has raised doubts about his continued participation in the series, though the team management has emphasised that no risks will be taken with his fitness. His absence leaves India facing significant challenges in terms of leadership and batting depth," the BCCI update stated..
