MS Dhoni offered a mentorship role by the BCCI, but he may not take it for this ‘Gambhir’ Reason: Report

According to a source, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) approached MS Dhoni about serving as a mentor for Team India months prior to the 2026 T20 World Cup. When Ravi Shastri was head coach for the 2021 T20 World Cup, the former Indian captain held the post for a brief length of time. According to reports, Dhoni is unlikely to accept the offer even if it has been given, particularly since Gautam Gambhir is leading the Indian team.

Even though both cricketing greats appreciate one another, there were recognised difficulties in their on-field cooperation during their playing careers. According to insiders, Dhoni would be hesitant to accept a position where conflicting philosophies might surface.

According to the report, the board thinks Dhoni might have an impact on the women's and youth cricket teams, which would be part of its "broad" responsibility in developing the nation's future stars. Following his brief time as mentor during the 2021 T20 World Cup, the former captain was reportedly offered the position; however, the BCCI has now attempted once more to enlist the Ranchi star.

India won the 2011 Cricket World Cup, the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, and the 2007 ICC World Twenty20 under Dhoni's leadership. Dhoni currently plays for the five-time champion Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) despite having retired from international cricket.

Expectations are now higher than ever after India won the T20 World Championship in 2024 under a new management team. Adding Dhoni to the strategy group could improve tactical depth, especially with a young team looking to leave its mark.
