MS Dhoni doesn’t need any introduction to the world of cricket. He has been one of the remarkable names in the tournament right from the inaugural season. He was bought as the marquee player in 2008 by the Chennai Super Kings for a record $1.5 million which is roughly estimated to be Rs 6 crores, as he became the most expensive player of the season.
That was also the only time he went under the hammer in the history of the tournament. He has also been the skipper to most title wins alongside Rohit Sharma in the IPL.
He has performed immensely as a player too where he is regarded as the best finisher the tournament has ever seen. His salary over the years also reflects his value to the team, making him the second-highest-earning player in aggregate over the years.
Being bought for Rs 6 crores in 2008, he continued to receive the same salary till 2010. He also won the first IPL for his team in 2010 as his team defeated Mumbai Indians in the finals. In the mega auctions of 2011, he was then rewarded as he was retained by the Chennai team with a price hike for a total sum of Rs 8.28 crores.
His salary was constant from 2011 to 2013 wherein he won another trophy in 2011, making CSK the first team to successfully defend the title after the success of 2010. For the years 2014 and 2015, he again had a salary hike as he received Rs 12.5 crores per season.
In the aftermath of match-fixing scandals, the Chennai team was banned for two years and then Dhoni was drafted into Rising Pune Super Giants for the same amount of Rs 12.5 crores per season till 2017. With the revival of CSK in 2018, he was drafted back in the team for Rs 15 crores and had the same fees till 2021.
His salary was then reduced for the next three seasons for an amount of Rs 12 crores. In the last auctions, he had a severe pay cut as he was retained at Rs 4 crores but remains one of the richest players of the tournament.
