India's women's team won the World Cup 2025 by defeating South Africa in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. This was India's first Women's World Championship after two losing efforts in the finals in 2005 and 2017, finally breaking their losing streak at critical moments and overcoming the obstacles to win.
Almost every single player performed admirably throughout the competition, as the collective effort propelled India to a historic world title in front of their home fans. The team is receiving several accolades, which they fully deserve, but the India Women's team has not always had it easy.
Following India's victory over South Africa, CSK Chairman and former BCCI President N. Srinivasan's old comments resurfaced, in which he publicly criticized women's cricket, stating that he would not allow it to happen and that they had no business playing the sport.
In 2017, after Harmanpreet Kaur's outstanding 171 against Australia, Srinivasan allegedly told former India captain Diana Edulji that "he hates women's cricket" and will never allow it to flourish. She called Srinivasan a chauvinist for not supporting the women’s cricket team.
“I’ve always been a BCCI basher, right from the day women’s cricket came into the BCCI fold in 2006,” Edulji had said at an Indian Express event in 2017.
“BCCI is a very male chauvinist organization. They never wanted women to dictate terms or get into this thing. I was very vocal from the start of my playing days. Even now, I would still say that it is not yet well accepted within BCCI that women’s cricket is doing well,” Edulji had expressed.
She also claimed that ex-BCCI chairman N. Srinivasan straightforwardly said to her face that women’s cricket didn’t even make a mark on his agenda.
“It is very difficult for them to accept the fact that this team has done very well. When Mr. Srinivasan became president, I would like to say that I went to congratulate him at the Wankhede Stadium (after the men’s team’s 2011 World Cup win). He said, ‘If I had my way, I wouldn’t let women’s cricket happen.’ He hates women’s cricket,” Edulji added.
However, Jay Shah, during his tenure as BCCI secretary, made sure India women’s cricket flourished as he brought in measures like equal pay for Indian women cricketers and the organization of the Women’s Premier League for more exposure for young female cricketers.
