Nepal stunned the West Indies by 90 runs in the second T20I of the three-match series to take a 2-0 series lead at Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Monday, September 29.
Moving into the details of the second T20I, Nepal posted a dominating total of 173/6 in 20 overs. Top-order batter Aasif Sheikh was the star with 68* off 47 balls, while the middle-order batter Sundeep Jora scored 63 runs in 39 balls.
In the chase, the West Indies got bundled out for 83 runs in 17.1 overs. All-rounder Jason Holder was the top scorer, scoring 21 runs in 15 balls with two sixes. Nepal bowlers Mohammad Aadil Alam, with a four-wicket haul, and Kushal Bhurtel, with three wickets, turned the game upside down.
On that note, let’s take a look at who said what after the game.
Nepal captain Rohit Paudel
We are very happy, it took a lot to win a game against a Test playing country and two days later we are winning a series and we feel really happy. It's very important, the way Aasif and Jora played, the way Jora accelerated, it helped Aasif. Today we improved a lot, in the bowling department the way we started in the powerplay, Deepi da and Karan started well and Alam followed it up.
We take pride in our fielding, last 10-15 years, there's a history that shows Nepal do good fielding. We worked hard on that and credit must go to the boys, especially Deepi da and Gulshan. It was a very important series, to showcase our skills in front of world cricket. that Nepal also belongs here. A lot of eyes are on Nepal, we want to continue it and want to play much more series against Test playing nations. We want to finish off on a high note, the motivation is there to clean sweep the series, for that we have to again start from the beginning. If we do that, we will carry the momentum to the qualifiers and we want to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Player of the Match Aasif Sheikh
Easily looking at the wicket we felt 160 was a good total. The idea was to start slow and to build a partnership and that's what we did in the powerplay as well. Credit should be given to Jora - he batted really well. We know we have good hitters and we wanted to hit every ball. It's already a big achievement, want to finish off on a higher note. Want to finish it off 3-0. Cricket means festival for Nepal. I want to thank all the Nepalese, they come everywhere we play, they support us and credit should be given to them as well.
West Indies captain Akeal Hosein
When you play against a group who have been together just for 4-5 years, you have your work cut out. A force together, you got to play good cricket. When West Indies play Nepal, everyone thinks it's a walkover. It's not about names, it's not about past stats, it's about how you adapt to the conditions and how you play the game.
They played 1 or 2 two good shots, kudos to their batters. Personally I would have liked to be economical. When you are chasing 174 or 175, you have your work cut out during the powerplay, you are way behind the eight-ball when you are 16/2 - you are asking way too much from the other batters and on these tracks which are slower and lower, they know the conditions and they exploited it really well.
Definitely a talking point for their unit. They were brilliant. They field really well, and it's hard to beat teams when they give their heart and soul. For us it's just about understanding really fast that it's international cricket. I mean no disrespect to the opposition, if you are trying to benchmark yourself here in international cricket and can't match the level, then you have to look yourself in the mirror and ask are you good enough for international cricket
