In a historic and dramatic encounter, the T20I match between the Netherlands and Nepal in Glasgow on Monday (June 16) witnessed an unprecedented three Super Overs to determine the winner.
The game was tied after the regular 20 overs, prompting a Super Over — already a rare event in cricket. Remarkably, that Super Over also ended in a tie, leading to the extraordinary occurrence of a second Super Over.
In a truly bizarre sequence of events, even that wasn’t enough, and for the first time ever, a third Super Over was played, finally producing a winner.
Earlier, the Netherlands had posted 152/7 while batting first in the tri-series clash that also features Scotland. They appeared to have the game in hand until Nepal's Nandan Yadav faced pacer Kyle Klein with 16 runs needed in the last over of ordinary play. He hit Klein for 4, 2, 2, and 4 to force the game into a Super Over.
The historic three super overs between the Netherlands and Nepal
Super Over 1- The ball for the first Super Over went to left-arm spinner Daniel Doram, who had previously bowled an economical stint of 4-0-14-3. But Kushal Bhurtel destroyed him, scoring 19 runs with two sixes and a four. Max O'Dowd responded with a six and a four off the final two balls, matching the Super Over and requiring a second after Michael Levitt smashed a six off the opening delivery.
Super Over 2- Lalit Rajbanshi was hit for two sixes in his first three balls in Super Over No. 2, but he recovered to limit the Netherlands to 17. Seven runs were needed off the last ball after Rohit Paudel opened Nepal's chase with a six and Dipendra Singh Airee added a four. The thriller then entered a record third Super Over when Airee hammered Klein over cow corner.
Super Over 3- The Netherlands' off-spinner Zach Lion-Cachet seized the ball and produced a game-changing over that dismissed Paudel and rookie Rupesh Singh without giving up a run. After that, Levitt put an end to a memorable game by hitting Sandeep Lamichhane for a six over long-on to seal the match.
