The teenager pacer in the South Africa U-19 setup, Kwena Maphaka has left everyone stunned and awestruck with his sensational performances in the ongoing Men’s Under-19 World Cup 2024. Maphaka scalped his third five-wicket haul in the ongoing edition of the tournament, with an amazing spell in the recently concluded super-six clash against Sri Lanka U19.
He has also become the first-ever player in history to claim 3 five-wicket hauls in a single edition of the U-19 World Cup. Speaking of his five-wicket hauls in the current edition, Maphaka has claimed five wickets each against Scotland and Zimbabwe U19 before bagging 6 wickets against Sri Lanka in today’s match, in which the hosts won by a big margin of 119 runs.
Notably, the 17-year-old has also become the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing Men’s Under-19 World Cup 2024, with 18 wickets on his credit in just 5 innings, with a sensational bowling average of 9.55. He is followed by India U19’s slow left-arm bowler Saumy Pandey, who has scalped 16 wickets in 5 innings with an outstanding bowling average of 6.62.
Maphaka-Norton duo rip apart Sri Lanka U19's batting lineup
Speaking of the action of the match between South Africa U19 and Sri Lanka U19; Sri Lankan skipper Sineth Jayawardena won the toss and asked SAU19 to bat first. Batting first, South Africa U19 posted a good total of 232 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in the allotted 50 overs.
Opening batter Lhuan-dre Pretorius scored a crucial half-century, with 71 runs off 77 balls, with 10 fours. Besides him, the lower middle order batter Riley Norton also contributed with the crucial 41 runs in the end to help South Africa post a challenging total.
But in the second innings, the pace-bowling duo of Kwena Maphaka and Riley Norton made the target very far-looking for the Islanders. Maphaka and Norton scalped 6 and 4 wickets, respectively to bundle out Sri Lanka only on the score of 113 runs in 23.2 overs.
