It has been an eventful day in Multan as the West Indies managed to beat Pakistan on a rank-turner. The hosts had prepared a pitch that was meant to suit their spinners; however, it backfired. Initially, their plan worked, but things went haywire as they were outbowled by the visitors. The West Indies batters struggled to adapt to the conditions, slipping to 54 for 8 in the first session of Day 1.
However, they found some resistance in the form of Gudakesh Motie, who scored 55 runs, Kemar Roach, who made 25 runs, and Jomel Warrican, who scored an unbeaten 36. This effort helped the visitors post 163 on the board. Then, the bowling trio returned to destroy the Pakistani batting line-up, bowling them out for a mere 154 runs.
This resulted in a 9-run lead at the end of the first innings. Day 2 began with captain Kraigg Brathwaite leading the way. It wasn’t always pretty, but his 52 set the tone for the second inning. Useful contributions down the order helped them reach 244—a substantial total on this type of pitch.
The batting collapses resulted in a humiliating loss for Pakistan
Chasing 254, Pakistan needed a strong start but lost both openers cheaply. Babar Azam, Kamran Ghulam, Mohammad Rizwan, and Salman Ali Agha got starts, but there was always a ball with their name on it.
Jomel Warrican, thanks to his 9-wicket haul, was declared both the Player of the Match and the Player of the Series. It has been an interesting 12 months for the West Indies, as they managed to level the series in tough conditions. The first instance was in Australia, where they leveled the series at the Gabba, and now here, in Multan.
In the post-match interview, Warrican stated: “Speeds were very important; bowling was very effective, and once I worked it out, it worked to my advantage. I just backed myself and my ability to find the boundaries and rotate the strike. We were backing ourselves to win the game—we had the belief after bowling them out for a cheap total in the first innings. Variation in pace and hitting the same length over and over, just keeping the same length, was the key to success.”
Questions will be raised about Pakistan’s approach to the game, as they failed to win in favorable conditions.
