Pakistan kept their hopes alive and tied with a thin thread in the semi-final contention of the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 after registering a miraculous win by 21 runs (DLS method) against New Zealand. Notably, both teams locked horns in the 35th match of the tournament at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

Pakistan skipper Babar Azam had the upper hand at the time of the toss and he asked the Kiwis to bat first. Batting first, Kane Williamson’s men posted a mammoth total of 401 runs for the loss of 6 wickets in the allotted 50 overs. Young opener Rachin Ravindra scored an amazing century, hitting 108 runs off 94 balls, hitting 15 fours and a six. Other than him, skipper Kane Williamson also led his side from the front and played a crucial knock of 95 runs.

Pakistan pacers, including Shaheen Afridi, Hasan Ali, Haris Rauf and Mohammad Wasim went very expensive as they conceded 325 runs in their combined 40 overs. Wasim scalped 3 wickets, alongside 1 wicket each picked by Hasan Ali and Haris Rauf.

Fakhar Zaman leads Pakistan’s run-chase with a swashbuckling century

While chasing the target, the men in green faced an early blow as they lost the wicket of Abdullah Shafique just at the team’s score of 6 runs in 2 overs. But then came an outstanding and unbeaten 194-run partnership of 194 runs for the second wicket between skipper Babar Azam and star opener Fakhar Zaman.

Meanwhile, the rain happened to play the spoilsport during the second innings during Pakistan’s run-chase. At the time of the rain interruption and the match getting called off, Pakistan had scored 200 runs for the loss of 1 wicket in 25.3 overs. Fakhar Zaman scored an unbeaten century, hitting 126 runs off just 81 balls, with 8 fours and 11 sixes, alongside a 66-run knock played by skipper Babar Azam, with 6 fours and 2 sixes.

Eventually, Pakistan won the match by a margin of 21 runs according to the DLS method, keeping their sixth spot stable in the points table in the tournament.
