Playing Test cricket is becoming challenging for modern-day cricketers due to the advent of T20 cricket and leagues. There are very few players who can grind it out in the longest format and fight it out, if needed, for a draw. Instead, the players throw away their wicket in the name of intent when there is no need to do so.
But there are still a few cricketers who prioritise Test cricket and are among the top players in the format currently:
5. Rishabh Pant
India’s next generation has taken over the Test team, and that was evident in the recent series against England. Rishabh Pant is the best batter among them, thanks to his aggressive batting. He has played 47 Tests so far and scored 3427 runs at an average of 44.5 with eight centuries and 18 fifties to his name. Pant is destined for greatness, just like Brook.
4. Harry Brook
Harry Brook is the next captaincy prospect for England, even in Test cricket. He made his debut in the format in 2022 but has been extremely consistent since then. Brook has so far played 30 Tests and plundered 2820 runs at an average of 57.55 with 10 centuries and 13 fifties to his name. He is certainly the next big thing in the format.
3. Kane Williamson
Kane Williamson of New Zealand often goes under the radar as the Kiwis play very few Test matches in a year. But he is never rusty when it comes to batting in the white. He has played 105 Test matches so far and scored 9276 runs at an average of 54.88 with 33 tons and 37 fifties. Williamson will certainly be eyeing the 10000-run milestone and might achieve the same in the next couple of years or so.
2. Joe Root
Joe Root, just like, Smith, is among the fab four players who have immensely improved in the last half a decade or so. He has been scoring runs for fun since 2021 and is now chasing the mountain of runs scored by Sachin Tendulkar in Test cricket. Root has played a staggering 158 matches in the format and amassed 13543 at an impeccable average of 51.3 with 39 centuries and 66 fifties to his credit. At the same time, he has also notched up six double-centuries with the best score of 262 runs.
1. Steve Smith
Steve Smith is among the stalwarts when it comes to Test cricket. He has featured in 119 matches so far and amassed 10477 runs at an average of 56.02 with as many as 36 centuries and 43 fifties to his name. Even at the age of 36, Smith is looking strong to continue in the longest format and seems good to play at least for a couple more years. He has already retired from ODIs and is unlikely to get a place in the T20Is. But Smith is an automatic pick or rather the first name on the sheet, when it comes to Tests.
