Ravi Ashwin names a unique choice for Indian Test captaincy

With Rohit Sharma’s decision to retire from the longest format of the game, the BCCI officials and the selection committee have to come up with a new name to lead the Indian Test team on the England tour in the five-match Test series.

While there are names like Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant, who can lead the side, former Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has come up with a unique choice that can lead the side at least for the next two years.

"We should not say this, Ravindra Jadeja is the most experienced person in that team. If you're willing to train a new guy, Jadeja could do captaincy for two years with a vice-captain under him. It will seem like I'm throwing in a wildcard," said Ravi Ashwin on the YouTube channel 'Ash Ki Baat'.

"We all wish to captain India after playing for the team. Jadeja too must be having that dream. He has also captained Chennai Super Kings, although that did not go well. I'm not saying he should become captain, but definitely be considered," he added.

As both Rohit and Kohli left the format, the focus will completely shift towards the Indian team’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, who will be heading the new-look Indian squad. On that note, Ashwin feels Gambhir will have a crucial role to play in picking India’s new captain.

"Whatever team gets selected will be the team of Gautam Gambhir. The most experienced player apart from Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah is Gambhir only. He will have a huge say in the appointment of captain as he has to groom the side," Ashwin observed.

India is scheduled to take on England in a five-match Test series, starting on June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. This series will fall under the new World Test Championship cycle.
