“I really hope he is being communicated to” - Ravi Ashwin surprised by Ruturaj Gaikwad’s constant non-selection in the Indian team

Former Indian spinner Ravi Ashwin has hoped that the Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is having proper communication with Ruturaj Gaikwad on his non-selection in the national team.

For the unversed, Gaikwad has played a total of 20 T20I innings, accumulating 633 runs at an average close to 40 and a strike rate of 143.53. Moreover, he has 2502 runs in IPL at a strike rate of 137.47.

However, his last outing for India came on the Zimbabwe tour last year. Also, he played six ODIs with his last 50-over game coming way back in 2023. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin is confused as to why Ruturaj Gaikwad is not in the selection scene.

“We do not need to talk about Ruturaj Gaikwad’s class. He’s got all the shots in the book. The only thing is that there is no information as to why he is not in the scene after his last T20 series," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“When he played the last T20, the coach was different, the captain was different. The issue is if there is no communication with such players, they will largely be left in the dark. I really hope he is being communicated to. He is batting brilliantly in red ball as well. I hope they consider him for a middle-order role."

Furthermore, the former off-spinner also asserted that in modern-day T20 cricket, the top-order should bat with a strike rate of more than 145 to be in the selection scene. 

“In modern-day T20 cricket, you will not be selected as an opener if you come with a strike-rate of less than 145. I am very sorry to say. You like players like Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, all these players who are setting it up for you," he said. 

"You could win the T20 World Cup because of how Virat played in the final against South Africa. But when you have players like these on one side, you need to fight on the other side. That’s why Rohit took it upon himself,” he said.
