Ravi Shastri takes a dig at Dinesh Karthik for axing Shubman Gill from KKR

Former Indian head coach and commentator Ravi Shastri and former Indian keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik were involved in a funny conversation, involving the Indian Test captain, Shubman Gill, who was once part of the Kolkata Knight Riders set-up in the Indian Premier League.

Shastri, who was part of the Sky Sports Cricket conversation with Nasser Hussain and Dinesh Karthik, hailed Gill for his twin centuries in the Birmingham Test, which propelled India to a 336-run win over England to level the series 1-1.

"In both innings at Edgbaston, Shubman batted like Bradman. India made a comeback because of the captain and batter Shubman. I'd give his captaincy 10 out of 10,” Shastri told Sky Sports Cricket.

Furthermore, Shastri also heaped praise on Gill for being a proactive captain instead of being reactive, like in the Leeds Test. He further said that Gill and the team management have done a decent job in team selection.

As Dinesh Karthik started speaking about Gill’s meteoric rise from batting the lower middle-order to requesting an opportunity to open the innings, Shastri intervened, taking a dig at DK for dropping Gill from the KKR set-up.

"DK said a lot about promoting Shubman as an opener... and then DK's team released him,” Shastri said jokingly.

However, Karthik didn’t stay silent as he went on to remind Shastri, who was the head coach of the Indian team at that time, recalling his last Test at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in 2018.

"Nasser Hussain told his coach his time was up. In my case, the coach came to my room and told me I was done,” Karthik responded.

For the unversed, Gill was roped in by the KKR set-up after the 2018 U19 World Cup. However, he was released ahead of the IPL 2022 Auction, where he was finally acquired by the Gujarat Titans franchise.
