Indian captain Rohit Sharma found his form in the second ODI of the three-match series against England at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday, February 9. As Rohit smashed his 32nd ODI century, India went past the tough target of 305 runs with four wickets in hand.
Rohit Sharma went on to score 19 runs in 90 balls with 12 fours and seven sixes. He stitched a 136-run opening stand in 16.4 overs with his opening partner Shubman Gill, who scored a 60-run knock off 52 balls.
Notably, Rohit took only 30 balls to reach his fifty and he cruised to his century in just 76 balls. His match-winning century helped him to bag the Player of the Match award. England skipper Jos Buttler has opened up on Rohit’s brilliant knock, stating that the Indian opener has been doing this for a long time in the 50-over format.
“I thought we did a lot of things well, we got into a nice position with the bat. We needed someone to push on and get us to 350. Credit to Rohit, he batted superbly, he has been batting like this for a few years in ODI cricket. Wanted to get runs on the board, it skidded on a bit and the opposition also played well. We played the powerplay brilliantly, we needed someone to kick on and a score around 330-350 would have been defendable,” Buttler said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
As the series is already clinched by 2-0 with one more game to go at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Rohit Sharma and his team would be eyeing to finish off the series 3-0 before heading to Dubai for the ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to start on Februarry 19.
At the showpiece event, India will take on New Zealand, arch-rivals Pakistan and Bangladesh.
