Rohit Sharma opens up on T20 World Cup 2024 victory

On the first anniversary of Team India’s T20 World Cup win in Barbados, the former T20I skipper Rohit Sharma has opened up on the journey that propelled Men In Blue to a historic win over South Africa in the grand finale.

While Team India secured their first-ever T20 World Cup win in the inaugural edition in 2007 under the leadership of MS Dhoni, they had to wait for 17 years to lift their second silverware in this particular format.

Speaking on Jio Hotstar, Rohit stated that he was nervous before the final against South Africa, adding that he couldn’t get sleep the night before the grand finale. Interestingly, Rohit was part of both 2007 and 2024 T20 World Cup triumphs.

“Thirteen years is a long time. Most people don’t even have a 13-year career. So, to wait that long to win a World Cup… the last one I won was in 2007. For me, it couldn't have gotten any bigger than this. I didn’t sleep the whole night. I was only thinking about the World Cup. I was nervous. I couldn’t feel my legs. Did I feel nervous? Of course. I just don’t show it—but inside, it was a lot. We were supposed to leave around 8:30 or 9 in the morning,” Rohit said exclusively on JioHotstar’s special show “Champions Waali Feeling Phir Se."

But I woke up at 7. From my room, I could see the ground and just kept watching it. I remember thinking—‘In two hours, I’ll be there. And in four hours, the result will be out. Either the Cup will be here or it won’t,” he added.

Moving into the details of the final, Rohit Sharma's Team India posted 176/7 in 20 overs. Virat Kohli was the star of the show with his 76-run knock off 59 balls. Axar Patel also shone with 47 runs in 31 balls with one four and four sixes.

In response, South African could score 169/8 in 20 overs, losing the game by seven runs. Hardik Pandya stole the show with the ball with 3/20 in three overs.
