Rohit Sharma to retire after Champions Trophy 2025? Former Indian cricketer opens up

Former Indian cricketer and commentator Sanjay Manjrekar feels the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan and Dubai could well be the last tournament for the Indian captain Rohit Sharma.

Manjrekar feels with the next ICC ODI World Cup scheduled two years away from now, it’s highly unlikely to see him in the mega event in 2027. Notably, Rohit will turn 40 by the ODI World Cup in 2027.

“I have a feeling (that) if he has decided, I mean, can Rohit Sharma be there for the 2027 Cricket World Cup? I don’t think so, very unlikely. So, then, this could be, what you are suggesting, could be the final tournament. I’m expecting Rohit Sharma to go out there and he should be actually liberated not so much by this being his sort of swansong or whatever, just by the fact that so much of quality batting to come (from him),” Sanjay Manjrekar told ESPNCricinfo.

Rohit Sharma was selfless in the ODI World Cup 2023, feels Sanjay Manrejar

Rohit Sharma was underperforming in the recently concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy, scoring only 31 runs in the whole Test series. He was averaging just 10.93 over his last nine Tests and only 6.2 in that particular tour.

However, he was back in his original form in the recent England ODI series, scoring an exceptional century. In the tournament opener in the ICC Champions Trophy, he started off with a 41-run knock off 36 balls against Bangladesh, which India won by six wickets.

“2023 World Cup (in India) Rohit Sharma’s popularity soared. What they loved about Rohit Sharma is that they saw the captain was selfless, went out there… (he) could have got a hundred but (instead) gave a great flying start to the team and made things easier for the players coming after him,” Manjrekar added.
