Former New Zealand middle-order batter Ross Taylor is all set to come out of his retirement and will represent the Samoa national team in the forthcoming Asia-East Asia-Pacific T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifier, which is scheduled to be played in October this year.

Taylor, who represented the Black Caps in 112 Tests, 236 ODIs and 102 T20Is, took to Instagram to make his decision official. He termed the decision as something more than just a “return to the game” he dearly loves.

Notably, the upcoming Asia-East Asia-Pacific T20 World Cup 2026 Qualifier in Oman is the nation’s last step for the qualification to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 in India and Sri Lanka.

“Coming out of retirement. It’s official – I’m proud to announce that I’ll be pulling on the blue and representing Samoa in cricket. This is more than just a return to the game I love — it’s the huge honor to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family,” said Taylor on Instagram.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to give back to the game, join the squad, and share my experience on and off the field. Time to get back out there – #685 to the world! CHEEEHOOO,” he added.

It’s worth noting that Taylor holds a Samoan passport through his mother's heritage. He became eligible for his second national team after a three-year standout period following his last game for New Zealand in April 2022.

While Taylor accumulated 7683 runs from 112 Tests, he amassed 8607 runs from 236 ODIs, with 1909 runs coming from 102 T20Is. His last professional game came against Northern Districts for Central Districts in the Super Smash 2023 season.
