Sanju Samson shares a funny dressing room tale about RR teammate

Sanju Samson, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper, recently joined Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on his show “Kutti Stories with Ash” for a candid chat. In recent weeks, reports have suggested that Samson may have requested RR to release him from the franchise.

The wicketkeeper-batter has been part of RR since 2013 and, ahead of IPL 2021, was named captain. Under his leadership, RR reached the 2022 final but fell short against Gujarat Titans (GT).

Speaking with Ashwin, Samson opened up on how captaincy has changed his perspective on cricket.

“Captaincy has opened up my perspective and helped me to accept these kinds of ways. There is no one way of succeeding in cricket. I don’t believe that there is only one way. When people are trying different things, I like to back them instead of questioning them,” he said.

Samson also shared a lighthearted story about his RR teammate Shimron Hetmyer, praising the Caribbean batter’s unique routine.

“But this guy, the match is at 8 PM, he will wake up at 5 PM, and be all sleepy during team meetings and all. Then he will score the most important runs for the team and win them the game. So, there is a way to do like that also,” Samson said.

Sanju Samson’s IPL journey began in 2012 with KKR

Rumours now suggest Samson’s tenure at RR could be nearing its end, with CSK being mentioned as a potential destination—especially after he was seen meeting CSK head coach Stephen Fleming during the MLC. However, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra believes another franchise may be a better fit.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said: “The first name that comes to my mind is not CSK. KKR should be the most desperate team. KKR don't have an Indian wicketkeeper-batter, and that just ties their hands behind their back. Secondly, what's wrong if you get a captain? I am not denying that Ajinkya Rahane has captained well and has scored runs as well.”

Interestingly, Samson’s IPL journey began with Kolkata Knight Riders back in 2012 before he moved to RR in 2013.
