Former India opener Virender Sehwag has issued a cautionary message to teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi, who recently made headlines with his IPL 2025 debut. At just 14 years old, Suryavanshi became the youngest player to feature in the tournament and immediately made an impression with his fearless batting. In his first match, he scored a fluent 34 runs, followed by another confident 16-run knock against Royal Challengers Bangalore that included two sixes.
Despite the promising start, Sehwag has urged the youngster to remain grounded and focus on long-term consistency rather than short-term fame. Speaking on Cricbuzz, Sehwag said that many young players have faded away after just one or two good performances. He emphasized the importance of sustained effort and used Virat Kohli’s IPL career as a benchmark for what Suryavanshi should aspire to.
Sehwag points to Kohli as the standard for longevity in IPL
“Suryavanshi must aim for playing 20 years in the IPL. Look at Virat Kohli, he started playing when he was 19 years old, now he has played all 18 seasons. That is what he should be trying to emulate. But, if he is happy with this IPL, thinking that he is now a crorepati, had a great debut, hit a six off the first ball, maybe we won’t see him next year,” Sehwag stated.
In his second game against RCB, Suryavanshi impressed again, scoring 16 off 12 balls, showcasing his ability to handle both pace and spin. He hit two powerful sixes off seasoned bowlers Shardul Thakur and Avesh Khan, displaying his aggressive intent. With typical T20 flair, he confidently cleared his front leg and drove the ball straight down the ground. Even against spinners, he appeared composed and technically sound.
In his debut outing, the young opener partnered with Yashasvi Jaiswal for an 85-run stand, laying the foundation for what turned out to be a potentially match-winning total. His temperament and attacking style have already caught the attention of fans and experts alike.
However, Sehwag’s remarks serve as a timely reminder that early success must be followed by continued hard work and humility if Suryavanshi is to carve out a lasting legacy in the IPL.
