Kerala MP Shashi Tharoor has shown strong support for 14-year-old Bihar cricketer Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, saying he should be called up to India soon. Tharoor compared Vaibhav to Sachin Tendulkar at a comparable age and called him a remarkable talent.
This recognition came after Sooryavanshi's outstanding start to Bihar's Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025–2026 campaign. Sooryavanshi scored 190 runs off just 84 deliveries against Arunachal Pradesh, including 15 maximums and 16 boundaries.
He became the youngest centurion in List-A history with his incredible touch, reaching his century in just 36 balls. With the help of Sooryavanshi and centuries from captain Sakibul Gani (128* off 40 balls) and Ayush Loharuka (118), Bihar achieved the highest-ever List-A team score of 574/6 in 50 overs.
Akash Raj and Suraj Kashyap each took three wickets as Arunachal Pradesh was dismissed for 177 runs. The game was won by Bihar by a record 397 runs. Sooryavanshi's record score earned him the title of Player of the Match.
Fans, commentators, and other pros were stunned by the knock, which many described as one of the most impressive domestic efforts by a kid in Indian cricket.
Shashi Tharoor compares Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with Sachin Tendulkar; wants him in India XI
Among those impressed was longtime sports enthusiast Shashi Tharoor. Tharoor asserted that Indian cricket might be seeing something genuinely exceptional, drawing a bold analogy.
Tharoor wrote on X, recalling Sachin Tendulkar's 16-year-old international debut, saying Tendulkar was the first 14-year-old to show such extraordinary promise and asked what selectors were looking for.
“The last time a fourteen year old showed such prodigious cricketing talent, it was Sachin Tendulkar – and we all know what became of him. What are we waiting for? Vaibhav Suryavanshi for India!” Tharoor posted on X.
In the recent U19 Asia Cup, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi fizzled out after scoring 171 against the United Arab Emirates in India's opening match, drawing criticism for his inability to score in pivotal games. In the remaining tournament games, which India lost to Pakistan in the championship game, he scored 5, 50, 9, and 26.
The Rajasthan Royals have decided to keep Sooryavanshi for the 2026 Indian Premier League, and if he keeps up his excellent play, the Indian squad may lose him.
