In a shocking twist in the Indian cricket scene, BCCI is planning to put Shreyas Iyer at the helm of Team India in ODIs, replacing the incumbent Rohit Sharma. This means the reports of Shubman Gill becoming the all-format captain might be false.
It has been revealed that the board and selectors are considering an alternative for ODIs, a day after the Ajit Agarkar-led selection committee strongly hinted at making Shubman Gill an all-format captain by designating the Test captain as the vice-captain of the Asia Cup-bound T20I team. According to reports, middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer is being considered by the BCCI to be the future skipper of India's ODI team.
Iyer is being considered as the long-term option to lead India in the 50-over format, maybe till the 2027 World Cup, according to a report in Dainik Jagran, even though no official decision has been made as of yet.
Shreyas Iyer becomes the no. 1 contender to become India’s ODI captain.
Shreyas Iyer was snubbed from the Indian Asia Cup 2025 squad in a surprising decision. Despite leading KKR to the IPL 2024 win and captaining Punjab Kings to the final of the IPL 2025, while scoring 604 runs with a strike rate of 175.07, Iyer was not picked in the 15-member India squad for the continental tournament in the UAE.
Shreyas Iyer’s case has been boosted by his recent efforts with the bat, especially in the Champions Trophy earlier this year. The 30-year-old was instrumental in India's championship run, amassing 243 runs in five games with steady hits of 15, 56, 79, 45, and 48.
Iyer has established himself as a reliable batsman with 2845 runs at an average of 48.22 in 70 ODIs, including five hundreds. The team management and BCCI are now taking his leadership potential seriously.
However, Rohit Sharma's choice over his international future will determine when Iyer is promoted. This year, Rohit, the current captain of the ODI team, turned 38. There is mounting conjecture that the October ODI series against Australia may be his and Virat Kohli's final appearance in international cricket, as they have already retired from T20s and Test matches.
The BCCI authorities are anticipated to meet following the Asia Cup to talk about the future plan, which would include talks with Rohit and Kohli, the report further stated.
Why did Shubman Gill fall from the candidates’ list for ODI captaincy?
The Dainik Jagran report also stated that Shubman Gill, the India Test captain and T20I vice-captain, is unlikely to take up the ODI leadership role. He is also the ODI vice-captain, but with BCCI concerned about his workload, Gill might miss out on the ODI captaincy role.
According to BCCI insiders, the current cricket schedule makes it impractical to designate a single player as captain for all formats. An all-year schedule of tours and competitions would put a tremendous amount of mental and physical strain on a three-format captain.
