Shubman Gill shone brightly on day one of the ongoing Edgbaston Test as the Team India skipper notched up his second century of the series. After scoring a ton in the first innings of the Leeds Test, Gill followed it up with another hundred in the first innings at Edgbaston.
India ended day one at 310/5 in 85 overs, with Gill unbeaten on 114 and Ravindra Jadeja not out on 41. With this century, India’s new Test captain joined an elite list by becoming only the fifth Indian batter to score a Test ton at this venue. He also became just the second Indian Test skipper, after Virat Kohli, to register a century at Edgbaston.
Another rare feat that Gill achieved was scoring a hundred on the first day of a Test in England on two separate occasions. He now also has back-to-back centuries in his first two Tests as captain—matching legends like Kohli, Vijay Hazare, and Sunil Gavaskar.
This knock was a crucial one for the visitors and showed true leadership from Gill, who led from the front after India had a shaky start. KL Rahul fell cheaply, and after an 80-run stand for the second wicket, India found themselves at 95/2. Walking in at number four, Gill added a 66-run partnership for the third wicket with Yashasvi Jaiswal.

It was yet another composed innings from the young captain. He was patient, waited for loose balls, and used soft hands effectively—displaying maturity and calmness throughout. After Jaiswal fell for 87, India lost Rishabh Pant and Nitish Kumar Reddy in quick succession and were suddenly at 211/5. But Gill held firm.
He then built an unbeaten 99-run stand for the sixth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja to take India to a strong position at stumps. This was also Gill’s third consecutive century against England in Tests, joining a legendary list that includes Dilip Vengsarkar, Rahul Dravid, and Mohammad Azharuddin.
Now, all eyes will be on Gill as he looks to continue his stellar innings and guide India to a big total on day two.
