In an interesting turn of events, Shubman Gill has been named as the new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma. His first assignment as the new ODI skipper will be against Australia Down Under, starting on October 19 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Moreover, the talismanic batting duo of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will also make their comeback to the international arena, having last played in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai in March 2025.

According to ESPNCricinfo, the Indian Senior Men’s Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, met on Saturday, October 4, in Ahmedabad, to appoint Gill as the new ODI skipper. With the ICC ODI World Cup scheduled to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia in 2027, Gill will have enough time to settle down as the captain.

Also, the report mentioned that the decision was taken collectively by the chief selector in coordination with India head coach Gautam Gambhir and BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia. With this, Gill is part of the leadership roles across all three formats.

For the unversed, Rohit became the full-time ODI skipper in December 2021, taking Team India to 42 victories in 56 games. He captained India to the successful Asia Cup 2018 title win as a stand-in captain. Later, he won the Asia Cup 2023 title as full-time captain.

Furthermore, he led the Indian ODI team to the finals of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 in Ahmedabad. Later, he propelled the Indian ODI team to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 title win in Dubai.

Gill emerged as India's Test captain following Rohit Sharma's retirement from the longest format of the game in May ahead of India's tour of England. India will play three ODIs in Australia, starting on October 19. The next two ODIs will be played on October 23 and 25, followed by five T20Is from October 29 to November 8.
