Sixes longer than 100m should get eight or 10 runs: Irfan Pathan

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan backs a revolutionary T20 rule change, proposing that sixes travelling over 100 meters should be rewarded with eight or ten runs. He cites Tim David's 129m hit and the need to reward pure power-hitting.

Former Indian all-rounder and commentator Irfan Pathan has asserted that it’s high time for the International Cricket Council (ICC) to bring in a new change to the shortest format of the game, stating that sixes longer than 100m should get eight or 10 runs.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Irfan Pathan asserted that power hitters like Tim David, who scored a 129m six off Axar Patel in the third T20I, should be receiving eight or 10 runs, instead of only six runs, adding that this change would be very important in the game of cricket.

"Tim David was in the limelight for hitting a 129m six to Axar Patel. Kevin Pietersen has said it for many years, and even I have been saying it that if a batter hits a six longer than 100 meters, he should get eight runs. Now you decide eight, 10, or whatever it is. But this change is very important,” Irfan Pathan said on his YouTube channel.

"There have always been changes, be it with the powerplay, the red ball, the new ball, or reducing the 60-over ODI to 50 overs. Then there came T20 cricket, and we have also seen T10 cricket, which I've played too. So, we have seen the invention of new rules in cricket,” he added.

"A batter getting eight or 10 runs for a six longer than 100 meters is bound to happen. This change is bound to happen either now or in the future. The sooner it happens, the better it is. It should definitely happen in T20s. When that happens, the value of power-hitters will increase even more,” he concluded.

Team India will lock horns with Australia in the penultimate T20I of the five-match series at Carrara Oval in Queensland on Thursday, November 6. The series is currently levelled at 1-1.
