Virat Kohli is a global icon in world cricket. The former India captain was the highest run scorer in the ODI World Cup 2023. Kohli also surpassed several records in the mega event as well. Virat stepped down from captaincy of the T20I after India’s World Cup T20 exit from the group stage. He wanted to only lead the side in the ODIs and Tests. However, he was removed from captaincy in ODIs as well by Sourav Ganguly who was then the president of the Indian Cricket Board.
After this, the former Indian Cricket Board president faced backlash from social media and fans of the Indian Cricket Team. The former India skipper has now clarified that he did not remove Kohli from the captaincy, as he wanted one captain for the white-ball and one in the Test. In 2022, the 35-year-old batter decided to resign from the post of the ODI as well in which the whole social media went against him.
The Prince of Kolkata stated in a viral video that only a part of it is correct. He said that he had no role in sacking Kohli. Sourav said that the star batter wanted to leave only the T20I captaincy and he just suggested to the player that it is more easy to have separate captains for limited-overs and Tests.
I have a bit of contribution in that but no matter who is administrating: Sourav Ganguly
Ganguly in a TV show named, Dadagiri Unlimited stated, "I didn't remove Virat from captaincy. I have told you this a lot of times. He was not interested in leading in T20Is. So, after he made that decision, I told him, if you're not interested in leading in T20Is, it's better if you step down from entire white-ball cricket. Let there be a white-ball captain and a red-ball captain."
"I pushed Rohit Sharma a bit to take up the captaincy role because he wasn't interested to lead in all three formats of the game. So, maybe I have a bit of contribution in that but no matter who is administrating, it's the players who perform well on the field. I was appointed as the President of the Indian Cricket Board to work for the betterment of Indian cricket, this is a small part of it,"
