Sourav Ganguly named Pretoria Capitals head coach ahead of SA20, Season 4

Former India captain and ex-BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the new head coach of SA20 franchise Pretoria Capitals ahead of the upcoming season. The franchise made the announcement on its social media platforms with the caption: "The Prince is all set to bring a royal flair to the Capitals camp! We are ecstatic to announce Sourav Ganguly as our new head coach. The Centurion awaits."

This will be Ganguly’s first stint as the head coach of a franchise team. Previously, he had been associated with IPL side Delhi Capitals (DC) in a different role. Between 2018 and 2019, he served as team director, but after becoming BCCI president, he had to step away. Later, in 2024, he took up the position of JSW’s Director of Cricket, which was seen as a sign that he might eventually move into a full-time coaching role.

Ganguly replaces former England batter Jonathan Trott, under whose guidance the Capitals endured a poor SA20 2025 campaign. They managed to win only two out of 10 matches and finished in fifth place. The franchise confirmed Trott’s departure with a heartfelt message: “Jonathan Trott, forever grateful for your leadership and unwavering dedication to the team. All the best on your next adventure! Once a Capital, always a Capital!”

Along with Ganguly’s appointment, the Capitals also announced the addition of former South Africa cricketer Shaun Pollock as their new assistant coach. Sharing the news on social media, the franchise wrote: "A new era of cricketing brilliance has arrived for the Capitals! Ushering in this new chapter is our new Assistant Coach, Protean legend Shaun Pollock."

Now, all eyes will be on this newly-formed coaching duo and whether their decisions can turn fortunes around for the Capitals in the upcoming season. With the SA20 auction scheduled for September 9, Ganguly’s immediate challenge will be to set the right strategy to build a competitive squad.

The season four of the SA20 League is set to begin on December 26, 2025. Pretoria Capitals will begin their campaign against Joburg Super Kings on December 27 at the SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium.
