Australia are all set to embark on a tour of Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series and as many One-Day Internationals. The Test series is a part of the ongoing cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC) even though there will be no consequences for the result of the series. Notably, this series is also the last in the third edition of WTC as Australia and South Africa have already qualified for the final.
Nevertheless, the two teams will compete for the Warne-Muralitharan Trophy starting on January 29. Both Test matches will be played at Galle International Stadium in Galle. Australia have already named their squad and will soon depart for the island nation even as Steve Smith is all set to take over the leadership duties after seven years for a full series.
Their regular skipper Pat Cummins will miss this Test series for the birth of his second child and the ankle injury that he managed right through the Test series at home against India. The visitors have also dropped Mitchell Marsh from the squad with Beau Webster coming good on debut in the New Year Test against India.
At the same time, the doors for Glenn Maxwell in Tests seem to have closed permanently with the selectors preferring Cooper Connolly in the squad as a spin-bowling all-rounder despite having experience of playing only four first-class matches.
The Warne-Muralitharan Trophy is currently with Australia having won it in the 2018-19 season and then drew the two-match series on their last tour to Sri Lanka to retain the trophy. They will be keen on improving their record in Asia and also retaining the trophy at the same time.
