Stats: India breaks the world record for losing most coin tosses in men’s international cricket

At Lord's on Thursday, India made history by breaking the previous mark for the most straight lost tosses in men's international cricket. In the current Test series against England, stand-in captain Shubman Gill made a mistaken call for the third time, confirming the record.

Shubman Gill, who took over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma after his retirement, has started his India captaincy tenure by losing all three tosses so far. England won the first Test with ease, while Shubman Gill led from the front in the second Test at Edgbaston, which India won by 336 runs.

The Lord’s Test is an iconic one, and this was the first time Shubman Gill was playing at the venue and the first time leading the Indian team at the venue as well. Ben Stokes tossed the coin in the air, it landed in his favor, and he chose to bat first.

India now has the most consecutive coin toss losses in men’s international cricket-13

After winning the toss at Lord's, England captain Ben Stokes chose to bat first, making it the 13th time in a row that an Indian captain has lost in all formats. This is a statistical anomaly with odds of 1 in 8,192.

The last time Suryakumar Yadav won a toss in a Twenty20 International match against England in Rajkot was on January 28, 2025. Under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, and now Shubman Gill, India has since lost the toss in every match format, including Tests, ODIs, and T20Is.

At Edgbaston, Headingley, and Lord's, Gill, who is leading India in the Test series, has now lost all three tosses, giving Ben Stokes the upper hand in decision-making each time.

In contrast, Rohit Sharma led India through the Champions Trophy earlier this year and the ODI series against England without winning a single toss. India has actually lost 15 straight ODI matches, setting yet another unwelcome world record.

The West Indies, which lost 12 straight tosses between February and April 1999, formerly held the record for the most consecutive toss losses in men's international competitions.
