Stats: Most runs by an Indian batter in a series in England

In his first Test series against England, 25-year-old Indian Test captain Shubman Gill is playing at his best. After just three games as captain, he has already shattered several records. Even before stepping onto the field for the third Test, Gill had already shattered the records for the most runs scored by an Indian player in a Test match and the best Test score in an innings by an Indian captain.

The Lord’s test was a close-fought contest for the Indian team, although it did not end the way the team had imagined it to. The third test of the series was at an equal score after the first innings from both teams, but the second innings became crucial, and even though India did not get the favourable results, the Indian skipper broke several records on the way.

Even though Shubman Gill didn't score as many runs as the Indian skipper did in the first two games, his pitiful 16 and 6 runs in the two innings against England in the third Test at Lord's allowed him to surpass Rahul Dravid's 23-year-old record. Gill has now surpassed Dravid's 602 in the legendary 2002 series to record the most runs by an Indian batsman in a Test series in England (607) in just three games.

Gill became the sixth Indian batter to reach 600+ runs in a bilateral Test series after breaking Virat Kohli's record of 593 runs after scoring 16 runs in the first innings. This was the tenth time an Indian batter had done so overall, with Dravid and Sunil Gavaskar having done so twice each and Virat Kohli having done so three times.

Gill's tally shows how hungry and mature he is. His standout summer will be remembered for more than simply his graceful strokeplay; it will also be remembered for sustaining the optimism of a team battling through the most difficult games. Shubman's series will be remembered as one of the greatest regardless of India's eventual outcome in this series.
