The Indian Premier League (IPL) has become the hotbed for extremely superlative batting performances. Especially in the IPL 2024 season, viewers got to see some of the biggest team totals in the tournament's history as batters took their game to another level.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) held the record to be beaten previously in IPL. They had made 263/5 against Pune Warriors India in Bengaluru in IPL 2013. This was the same match in which Chris Gayle hammered 175* with 17 sixes in the knock, the highest individual total in not only IPL but T20 history.
This record was bettered again and again in the IPL 2024 season with teams eclipsing the 263-mark and going past it repeatedly.
The fourth-highest team total in IPL history belongs to Sunrisers Hyderabad, who hit 266/7 against Delhi Capitals in the 35th match of IPL 2024. Travis Head with 89 led the way, while Shahbaz Ahmed made 59*. DC could only muster 199 runs in reply, with Jake Fraser-McGurk making 65 runs.
The third-highest IPL team total also came in IPL 2024, against Delhi Capitals. Eventual 2024 IPL champions KKR hammered 272/7 in 20 overs. After choosing to bat first, Sunil Narine (85), Angkirsh Raghuvanshi (54), and Andres Russell (41) took the KKR total past the 270-run mark. In reply, DC could make 166 with Rishabh Pant and Tristan Stubbs making fifties but lost by 106 runs.
The top two highest team totals in the IPL belong to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). The second-highest IPL team total of 277/3 came against Mumbai Indians in an epic match in Hyderabad. Heinrich Klaasen’s 80* in 34 balls headlined the SRH innings with fifties from Travis Head (62), Abhishek Sharma (63), and 42* in 28 balls from Aiden Markram. MI gave a good shot at the chase, scoring 246/5, losing by 31 runs.
The highest team total in IPL history is SRH’s 287/3 in 20 overs against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). SRH was asked to bat first, and Travis Head took the opportunity to score 102 in just 41 balls. He was aided by Heinrich Klaasen’s 67 and quick-fire 32* and 37* by Aiden Markram and Abdul Samad, respectively.
RCB did a decent job of chasing the total, with Faf du Plessis scoring 62 in 28 and Dinesh Karthik playing an epic knock of 83 in 35 balls, making 262/7 and losing the game by 25 runs.
