Former Indian captain and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has questioned PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer’s batting approach against RCB pacer Josh Hazlewood in the Qualifier 1 of the IPL 2025 season in Mullanpur on Thursday, May 29.
Interestingly, this was the fourth instance, Hazlewood got Iyer’s wicket. While PBKS were losing wickets at regular intervals, Iyer played a poor shot to get out caught behind for only two runs in three balls.
Gavaskar slammed Iyer for his poor dismissal in the fourth over, which led to PBKS losing three wickets for only 30 runs. Moving into the details of the wicket, Iyer went for a wild slog against Hazlewood which resulted in caught behind.
"This is not a good shot. This is a nothing shot. One can understand if you are trying to play it over long off, but this is just a wild swing. Two wickets down, just the fourth over going," Gavaskar said on air.
Moving into the details of the game, after being tasked to bat first, PBKS got bundled out for 101 runs in 14.1 overs. The star batter for PBKS was Marcus Stoinis, who scored 26 runs in 17 balls, while Suyash Sharma and Hazlewood scalped three wickets apiece.
In the chase, RCB took 10 overs to seal the game with eight wickets in hand. Phil Salt was the star of the show, smacking 56* runs in 27 balls with six fours and three sixes.
“In all the games we have played here there has been some variable bounce. We can't give such reasons because we are professionals at the end of the day and we have to bat according to the situation and we have to live up to it. We have lost the battle, but not the war,” Iyer said at the post-match presentation.
