Sunil Gavaskar rates Shubman Gill’s 754 above his 774 runs

Former Indian opening batter and commentator Sunil Gavaskar has rated the Indian Test captain Shubman Gill’s performance against England way ahead of his record of 774 runs in his debut series against the West Indies in 1971.

It’s important to note that Gill, in his debut Test series as captain, went on to score 754 runs in five Tests and 10 innings, emerging as the leading run-scorer of the series. However, Gavaskar still holds the record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in a Test series.

It’s worth noting that Gavaskar’s record 774 runs came in four out of the five Tests he played against West Indies. Interestingly, he made his international debut in the second Test of that particular series.

“The difference is that 754 came with the additional responsibility of being captain. I was the baby of the team. You know, it wouldn’t have mattered if I had failed,” said Gavaskar on Sony Sports Network.

“Nobody would have given a hoot if I had failed. But to be the captain and score 750-plus runs—750-plus runs where he’s making a difference to his side’s fortunes. Don’t go by those 20 runs, but just see what that 754 has done for Indian cricket,” he added.

After the end of the third day’s play, Gavaskar presented Gill with a signed shirt and a cap, hailing him for his exceptional batting skills on foreign soil, adding that the only difference is that Gill had an additional responsibility of being the captain.

“Well, yes, in anticipation of him going past my record, I had gotten something for him. This is all in God’s hands. But 754 runs, it’s fantastic. The difference is that 754 runs have come with him having the additional responsibility of being the captain,” he added.
